Rare case of multiple brain abscess – Scedosporium apiospermum
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction Scedosporium apiospermum is the asexual form of fungus Pseudallescheria boydii which is commonly found in soil and sewage. It usually causes cutaneous infection (mycetoma) and otitis externa and in rare circumstances causes invasive disease in immunocompromised patients, which can involve the central nervous system with devastating prognosis. We report a case of brain abscess caused by S. apiospermum.

Brain abscess due to Scedosporium apiospermum in a non immunocompromised child.
Scedosporium apiospermum is a filamentous fungi that commonly causes cutaneous infection. In certain circumstances, S. apiospermum can also cause invasive disease, which can involve the central nervous system (CNS). When the CNS becomes involved, treatment is difficult, therapeutic options are limited and the prognosis is poor. Early identification and treatment can decrease the mortality rate....
متن کاملTreatment of a brain abscess caused by Scedosporium apiospermum and Phaeoacremonium parasiticum in a renal transplant recipient.
Cerebral mycosis is a significant cause of morbidity among immunocompromised populations. We present here a case of cerebral infection with Scedosporium apiospermum and Phaeoacremonium parasiticum in a 49-year-old renal transplant recipient. Fourteen years after renal transplantation, the patient presented with invasive pulmonary aspergillosis treated with intravenous liposomal amphotericin B. ...
متن کاملA rare case of cytomegalovirus, scedosporium apiospermum and mycobacterium tuberculosis in a renal transplant recipient
BACKGROUND Renal transplant recipients are at high risk of developing multiple infections, often concomitantly because of their immunocompromised status. Post renal transplant infections are often elusive and require extensive evaluation for proper diagnosis and treatment. A high index of suspicion is required and an attempt should be made to confirm the microbiological diagnosis from each site...
متن کاملOrbital apex syndrome secondary to a fungal nasal septal abscess caused by Scedosporium apiospermum in a patient with uncontrolled diabetes: a case report
BACKGROUND Orbital apex syndrome is a localized type of orbital cellulitis, where mass lesions occur at the apex of the cranial nerves. Although nasal septal abscess is uncommon, the organism most likely to cause nasal septal abscess is Staphylococcus aureus, and fungal septal abscesses are rare. Here we present an extremely rare and serious case of orbital apex syndrome secondary to fungal nas...
متن کاملScedosporium apiospermum endophthalmitis: diffusion-weighted imaging in detecting subchoroidal abscess
PURPOSE To describe the imaging appearance of Scedosporium apiospermum (S. apiosermum) endophthalmitis in an immunocompetent female who underwent high resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the orbits and showed subchoroidal abscess on diffusion-weighted imaging. METHODS WE HIGHLIGHT UTILITY OF MRI SEQUENCES: diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), flui...
